Loads of petrol and diesel models to choose from. A mid-range diesel should provide the right amounts of torque and fuel economy and the 2.4-litre petrol is also worth a look.

Driving

Plenty of grip equates to good cornering ability, with a minimum of body roll. Ride is on the firm side.

Feel

Very well refined in terms of in-cabin noise, which makes for a good cruiser.

Price

May not look cheap but with all that kit it looks like a good investment, especially with Volvo residuals rising. The right engines - ie mid-level diesels - will return a good fuel economy.

Quality

Looks and feels nice inside and there shouldn't be any problems with reliability.

Safety

A reinforced body, loads of passive and active safety kit bagged the S40 a 5-star NCAP rating.

Space

Decent space for four but an awkward boot.

Equipment

Cruise control, electric windows, electronic climate control, remote central locking and 16" alloy wheels are all standard, while Sport models add sportier trim and suspension and larger alloys.
