1.2-litre petrol model delivers 54bhp or 64bhp, both of which feel underpowered on a motorway. All 1.4 engines should be on the money, and the turbodiesels will be frugal. GTi has 150bhp and is quick.
Does what it says on the tin: a smooth and safe ride, but not a car to enjoy thrashing around the back roads. Not that we'd do that, of course.
Should be well refined and a good cruiser.
Decent fuel economy and residuals but the Polo is priced towards the top of the segment.
Interior's decent if uninspired. Engines should be strong and reliable.
Two airbags and ABS are standard at base spec. Want anything else and you'll need to flash the cash.
The Polo's well sized for a supermini, though 5 adults may be pushing things. Decent sized boot. 5-door versions have the edge.
Entry-level spec is pretty mean, with just central locking and a CD player as standard. Anything above that will give you alloys, aircon and electric front windows. Sport kit gets the styling and a lowered suspension.
Renault Clio, Toyota Yaris, Vauxhall Corsa, SEAT Ibiza, Skoda Fabia
Wide choice of engines, smooth ride, VW badge.
Not the best drive in its class. Mean kit levels and questionable value for money.
