1.9 and 2-litre direct injection petrols and turbodiesels are the order of the day, all have plenty of power and torque.

Driving

Excellent handling and good at corners. Ride is a little firm, but well within what is tolerable.

The Jetta is priced between the Gold and Passat, but looks a little pricey. Depreciation will probably be heavier than the Golf though fuel costs should be OK.

The Jetta's lovely inside and its mechanicals will be sturdy and reliable.
