Big choice of engines with the turbodiesles being the obvious choices. The VXR model is not an obvious choice - it has a top speed of 144mph. Why?
Based on the new Astra, the Zafira handles superbly and provides a good ride.
Refinement is generally very good, although the less powerful engines may struggle.
List prices, residuals and running costs should be good, but entry-level trims have poor standards of kit.
Looks and feels good inside, while the mechanicals should be sound too.
Front and side airbags are standard on all models, stability control and curtain airbags are higher up.
Masses of spaces and a seemingly infinite number of split and flatfolding options. Seats seven comfortably.
Electric front windows, four airbags and remote central locking as standard. You'll have to put your hand in your pocket for aircon, CD player and curtain airbags.
Volkswagen Touran, Renault Espace, Mazda5
Versatile, spacious, good to drive.
Mean kit levels. Those awful man-children on the advert.

A real disappointment. The promise a fast frugal family holdall. The reality, very poor reliability, appalling refinement and dismal fuel consumption < 36 mpg. Avoid!

Performance in sport mode of 150 CDTi engine is extremely impressive. Handling with standard suspension and standard low profile tyres (225-45-17) is also impressive - but with active suspension (CDC) it is brilliant. Excellent versatile seats, which can be laid flat/folded to give full load area without removing any seats - so garage is free! Only drawback is poor fuel consumption, with 30-33 mpg typicall, on normal commutes, and 40 - 43mpg very best. Which is well below Vauxhall spec. Awaiting Vauxhall dealer analysis to advise if the car has a problem - or verify if they are issuing duff fuel consumption figures.. which is what I expect to be the case!! Ecconomy is a real shame as versatility and performance is excellent otherwise!

Down sizing from 170bhp 2.0t Vectra to the 150 bhp was not such a relapse as I had thought. In sport mode , quick and responsive remarkable considering it is a Diesel. Loads of Space and rapid seat assembly without removing/replacing seats. In town-yes, as expected fuel consumption at minimal35 mpg.........Dual carriageway around 45 mpg. Not bad considering all that torque.

An average of 44,39 mpg on a mix of local and long distance driving. A big load space for tools and still take five passengers. Letdown no spare tyre.
