Underpowered, if nippy, 1-litre petrol; eager 1.3-litre; and fairly noisy if frugal 1.4-litre diesel.
Ride and handling are both adequate, but slightly off the pace.
Noisy, especially the diesel and 1-litre petrol.
A bit pricey, though the Yaris will hold on to more of its value than most other superminis. Running costs cheap, especially the diesel.
Should prove to be reliable, but the interiors are cheap-looking.
Loads of airbags, ABS, dual-stage seatbelts and a strong security package. 5 NCAP stars.
Good use of space, with sizeable boot.
Remote central locking, electric windows and CD player are standard.
Vauxhall Corsa, Renault Clio, Fiat Punto.
Good interior and running costs. Strong 1.3-litre engine.
Slightly pricey, ride not great, low-quality interior.

My mother has one of these, and I sometimes drive it to do shopping or on short weekend breaks. It is a very old-peoples-car, but I have to admit that I love it (I'm only 20! What's wrong with me?). It handles great, and despite of the tiny engine, it is more than good enough, it is far better than the Clio I learned to drive in. The dashboard and instruments are great. It is especially fun to look at the miles per gallon display, and see how carefully I can drive the car. If I could afford one, I think I would buy one myself.
