A 1.5-litre petrol engine is bolstered by an electric motor to produce 141bhp. Motor boosts torque below 22mph but above that the Prius lacks the pull of a turbodiesel. Still holds its own, though, through the autobox.
Decent compromise between ride and handling.
Engine is very quiet and lows revs, and the Prius is well insulated.
Expensive to buy but cheap running costs will claw lots of cash back. Generous hybrid warranty is also attractive.
Looks good inside and previous generation Priuses were reliable.
ABS with EBD is standard, as are eight airbags and the Prius scored 5 stars in NCAP testing.
Battery eats into bootspace but there's ample space for four. Rear seats splitfold to boost space.
Climate control, electric windows, CD player and alloys are standard.
Honda Civic Hybrid.
Cheap running costs, feeling of superiority. Decent handling too.
Doesn't have the torque throughout the rev range that a diesel would.

The Prius is never going to set the world on fire with its performance, but it is certainly an enjoyable drive around town. It is superbly smooth and quiet, sometimes to the point that pedestrians relying on their ears, rather than their eyes, to check if it is safe to cross, will step out in the road right in front of you. On the motorway the car struggles to accelerate at speeds over 60mph, but you bought this car because you want to avoid the congestion charge and have no business driving outside the M25. The interior is well planned, looks good and has loads of legroom for everbody.
