Decent 1.4- and 1.6-litre petrols and a 1.4-litre and 2-litre diesels. Both oil burners are strong and torquey, with the 2-litre approaching the hot variety.
Good ride and drive, though body roll and weak cornering let the side down somewhat.
Noise is well isolated.
Running costs good, especially the diesels, and residuals should be strong. Bit pricey to start with, though.
Well made and should be reliable.
Six bags, ABS are standard. Good security kit.
Excellent use of space for passengers.OK - if versatile - boot.
Aircon, CD player, electric windows and remote central locking are standard.
Mazda 3, Ford Focus, Renault Megane.
Replaced by the similarly OK-ish Toyota Auris in mid-2007.
Decent performance, well refined, spacious.
Weaker engines are a bit rubbish.
