1.6-litre petrol is underpowered, 2-litre model has oomph. Diesels are both capable and new Altea FR develops 170bhp up to 7000rpm. The 2-litre TDI offers power and economy.
Great control and a generally good ride, with some trade-off on sportier models towards a better drive.
Diesels are a little clattery in low gears and lower-powered petrol model needs to be worked hard around town.
List prices good, running costs vary widely depending on engine. Diesels may be a little pricier but will hold more value.
Cabin and engines are of good quality.
Six bags, ABS and stability control are standard.
Lots of headroom. Splitfolding rear seats. Dual-level boot.
CD player only as standard but decent kit levels above that. DSG auto box and leather are options. Sport trim for boy racers and reluctant Dads.
Ford C-MAX, Seat Altea
Good drive and space.
Doesn't quite work as an MPV.
