Loads of engines to choose from, depending on whether you're looking for economy or thrills. Diesels offer something in the middle. FR churns out 200bhp and is rammed full of torque.
Superb cornering, body control and handling combined with a smooth ride. Sports suspension is on the harsh side but delivers more driving thrills.
Lower-rated diesel and petrol models make their presences known, but engines are generally quiet.
List prices and running costs are good. Diesels may be a little pricier but will hold more value.
Interior feels pleasant and durable and VW-sourced engines will last.
Six bags, ABS and stability control are standard, as are ISOFIX child seat fittings.
Plenty of room in the cabin and the boot is a good size too. Excellent for beanpoles.
Electric front windows and central locking are standard, as is a CD player. Aircon on all other models. Loads of flashy kit on the Sport models.
Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Renault Megane, Citroen C4
Great handling. Plenty of space.
Some engines are unimpressive, but there's not much else to complain about.
