Performance

All engines are sufficient, but the 1.8 petrol and the diesels are more assured on the motorway. The Cupra 1.8 is approaching 'hot', with plenty of torque in the mid-range.

Driving

Firm ride makes for good handling, though the comfort - or lack of it - may not be to everyone's taste.

Feel

Diesels clatter a little and there's some wind noise at speed.

Price

Prices and residuals are good. Running costs excellent.

Quality

Interior feels pleasant and durable and VW-source engines will last.

Safety

Two front bags and ABS on the standard models. Traction control and extra airbags on higher specs.

Space

Good space upfront and in the boot. Rear is cramped and rear bench splitfolds.

Equipment

CD player, leccy windows and central locking as standard.

Alternatives

Renault Clio

Pros

Good drive, good engines, good room.

Cons

Ride may be too firm for some.

Underpowered, but fun

The Ibiza is a capable car. Surprising amounts of space, even in the back seat. But the engine is very weak. I am happy I only rented it so I could give it back. Maybe in the future, I will consider buying an Ibiza, but then with a slightly bigger engine. I hear the 1.4 is good, or maybe even a diesel.

Ibiza 1.2 sx

New last week, and now 600 miles on the clock. The car is a treat to drive, with the smooth motor and low road noise. It climbs hills with ease and is light to drive. The clutch is light, unlike other VW engined cars I have driven. The only bad point about the Ibiza lx is the poor plastic trim and fittings used inide.
