Renault's usual baffling wide range of engines on offer here. Somewhere in the mid-range - the 1.6 petrol or 1.5 turbodiesel - is quite adequate, unless you're into drag-racing.
Handling disappoints somewhat, but the ride is comfortable enough.
Smaller engines are noisier, unsurprisingly.
Cheap to buy and run.
Good cabin. Some questions over reliability.
Packed with safety kit and 5 NCAP stars.
Rear seats and bootspace are limited, though splitfolding increases size. Sport Saloon offers a bigger boot.
Entry-level Extreme spec offers very little. Alloys, climate control and aircon are available at Authentique level for £800 more.
Mazda 3, Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Honda Civic, Volkswagen Golf
Practical, refined and safe. Great looks.
Poor space in the back.

... Shaking that ass. From the cheeky commercials to the car itself, there is no excuse for having missed the Megane. It is cheeky, safe, and fun - everything I want in a car! Had it for two years, never had a problem. Great!

Love the look of this car and i was originally quite impressed but over time the car just doesnt seemt o have the same get up and go about it. Possibly should have gone for a bigger engine than the 1.4. In fact thats exactly what im going to do! Really like the car except for its lack of b***s. Will buy a new one but will go for the bigger engine for the added va va voom.

I've been having problems with my Renault Megane ever since I bought it. It may be a one-off dodgy model but its got to go... sorry!

I switched to my Megan from a Ford Focus £ month ago. I am a driving instructor and find the Megan much easier to manoeuvre than the Focus. its much quieter than the acceleration is great. The rear seats are not as substantial as the Focus and the brackets are tend to bend when used regularly. The fuel consumption isn’t as good as the Focus. I can only get up to 39.7 mpg as apposed to 44 mph with the Focus. However I can put up with because I prefer the Megan to The Focus. I'm disappointed with the service intervals. The first service was at 9000 miles. I’ve done that in three month. So it is a little more expensive than the Focus. It cost me £200 for the first service and they even charged me £1.49 for the screen wash. I filled it up the day before. £39.75 for the oil, over the top I think. All in all I’m glad I switch to the Megan.
