3.5-litre V6 petrol and 3.2-litre diesel are both capable. The petrol has a better turn of pace but the diesel is the one for towing or off-roading.
Great off-road. Not confident on-road due to body roll and a firm ride.
Just plain noisy.
List prices on entry-level models are good and resale values are strong. High running costs and prices on higher specs are prohibitive though.
Tough and durable inside, if cheap-looking.
Four bags and ABS as standard only.
Five-door version has third row of seats that folds up from the floor. Otherwise plenty of space for five and a big boot. 3-door version is similarly spacious.
Aircon, alloys, metallic paint and electric windows are standard. Satnav an option and leather on higher specs.
Volvo XC90, Land Rover Discovery
Good off-road, spacious and practical.
Poor on-road, especially in relation to competitors.
