1.4-litre petrol feel underpowered on the motorway, but the larger engines provide more cruising ability. Diesel has the torque and economy.
Smooth ride, good grip and good body control.
Generally refined, although the diesel clatters at low speed and the 2.0-litre petrol shouts when revved.
Good running costs and list price.
Strong and sturdy car, with pleasant interior
Driver, passenger and side bags as standard, with curtain bags at higher trim. ABS with brakeforce distribution are standard. Alarm and deadlocks also standard.
Five can fit in, albeit cosily. Boot is a little on the small side but rear seats fold 60/40 to provide much more space.
Alloys and electric front windows on the basic model. CD player and aircon above that and climate control on top spec. Satnav optional.
Volkswagen Golf
Lots of kit, good engines and drive. Decent space. Good car all round.
Firm urban ride.

I have been driving a Mazda 3 for a few months now, after trading in my 1999 Mazda 626. Compared to the old model, this car is very fast, feels firm, and is a great amount of fun. I recommend it to all my friends. The best thing about the car is the looks. It is fast and fun, but it looks really good is most important. I would choose the Mazda 3 over the Mercedes'. It looks more aimed at the young market, so that is perfect!

Good looking, well built, fun to drive superb engine and good value for money. I wish that the colour range was a bit more exciting.
