2.5, 3.0-litre V6 or 4.2-litre V8 constitute petrol models deliver plenty of performance, with only the lowest-rated model underpowered. 2.7-litre diesel covers all the bases, with strong pull.
Good suspension and decent ride can be taken to extremes with Sport suspension, which provides a, well, sportier ride with the resulting trade-off being a firmer ride. Size acts against the car being too much of a throwabout. Cruises like a dream though.
V6 and V8s growl when revved but are hushes at speed. Diesel is superbly refined.
Only the diesel will take the sting out of running costs and while residuals won't match up to the premium rivals, list prices will undercut them significantly.
Looks good until you notice the Ford-sourced bits and bobs. Still, reliability shouldn't be a problem.
Stability control, ABS and 6 bags in every car.
Plenty of space for four; five might be pushing it. Large boot, but it's rather shallow.
Climate control, alloys, cruise control, electric front seats. Everything you'd expect. At higher specs it's gadget city.
BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class Saloon, Audi A6, Volvo S80, Saab 9-5
The S-Type is being phased out and replaced by the XF, due in March 2008.
Good engines and chassis.
A little cramped in the back. Thirsty engines.
