1.8-litre petrol is eager and speedy, though quick to lose torque so needs to be redlined to provide genuine power and response, while the 1.4-litre engine is weak.
2.2-litre diesel provides a good, powerful drive at a less hyper pace.
Great grip married with great suspensions. Steering is responsive.
The better engines are quiet and smooth, but there's some cabin noise at speed.
Good running costs. Residuals a mystery at the moment. List prices are comparable with other models in the segment.
Superb, if slightly off-the-wall inside. Materials are plush and look classy.
Six bags, ABS, stability control as standard. Alarm and deadlocks ensure your Hybrid is still there.
Plenty of legroom all round but headroom is a little limited due to the Civic's shape. Massive boot extends further when rear seats are split to a large 1352 litres.
Alloys, CD player and satnav on all but the entry-level model.
Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia
Looks great, drives well, good space.
Odd looks may dent residuals. Slightly cramped space.

I got a great deal on the type s with a satnav option, and I went for it. For just a little bit more cash, I could have bought a Type R, and I am kicking myself over it every single day. Insurance would have been more expensive, but... Imagine a Type R! Having said that, the only thing that is wrong with my car is that it isn't a Type R. It is a great little ride, good throttle response, fast away from stoplights, and the sat nav is amazing. It is good fun to drive, and it looks good, too.
