Performance

Diesels are a better bet than the petrols, which can feel sluggish at low revs. That said the V6 is refined and seriously powerful.

Driving

Fantastic handling and a smooth, comfortable ride make the Mondeo the benchmark in this field. Avoid sportier body kit.

Feel

Not the greatest for refinement in its class. The Mondeo's bitterest enemy - the Vectra - is ahead on that score.

Price

Residual values are hurt by the Mondeo's ubiquity and running costs aren't especially good.

Quality

The interior looks, sounds and feels good. Mechanicals and engines should be strong.

Safety

Front, side and full curtain airbags, active head restraints and ABS are standard.

Ford Mondeo Internal Image

Space

The Mondeo is a huge car and the boot cavernous but the rear seats fold as one bench.

Equipment

Air-conditioning, cruise control, remote central locking, electric heated door mirrors and a CD player are standard.

Alternatives

Vauxhall Vectra, Toyota Avensis, Volkswagen Passat

Pros

Comfort, good drive, huge interior space.

Cons

Poorly refined, relatively speaking. Residual values are poor.

Very Impressed

by William George Dunbar (Aberdeen) - 07/11/2006 19:07:55

My previous car was a 1994 Ford Mondeo 1.8TD, which I bought in 1998 and I owned it for 8 years. Serviced every 6,000 miles and repaired when needed, it never let me down. I was initially put off buying a Mondeo 2 litre petrol Zetec when I heard reports about the rubber flywheel disintegrating and causing thousands of £s of damage (strange that no salespersons had any knowledge of that), but neither I have not met anyone who owns a Mondeo Zetec who has experienced that. So I bought one and it is just as responsive as the old TD and I am very impressed with it. What's new to me is the cruise control, the computer display, the air conditioning, being able to play CDs and the whisper quiet engine. It is very comfortable and on a long motorway run (70 mph) returns over 40 mpg. I hope to keep it for as long as I had my Mondeo TD and with the 12 year anti-rust warranty, keep it looking like new! Maybe I should give an updated review in 8 years time.
