1.2-litre 68bhp and 1.4-litre 77bhp engines are a little underpowered, though the latter is game. Of the four turbodiesels the 1.3-litre 75bhp model is willing to work hard while the 130bhp 1.9-litre is powerful and fun.
Lots of grip into corners and responsive steering, if somewhat light. Suspension is a little firm around town, but fine on the straight.
The petrols are both on the loud side at high revs, but the diesels are smooth. Wind noise intrusion mean it's not as good a cruiser as it might have been.
Good value for money. Cheap running costs. Residuals should be good.
Sturdy and decent-looking materials inside. Engines will be fine.
Up to seven airbags available that deploy according to crash impact. ABS with brakeforce distribution and stability programme.
Plenty of room for four adult, five is possible. Bootspace isn't huge at 264 lites, but it's decent for its class. Rear seats split 60/40.
CD player, remote locking and follow-me-home lights as standard. Higher trims add alloys and MP3 player.
Toyota Yaris, Renault Clio
Good size, well equipped. Good drive.
Some engines are underpowered, some trim looks cheap.
