2.0-litre Hdi diesel engine has plenty of pull and is frugal.
Hydractive gas suspension will iron out a lot of the bumps in the road, but it's a big car and often feels like it.
Well-insulated cabin.
Big discounts may be offered, but they'll need to be to offset poor resale values.
Stories of poor reliability dog the C5.
Loads of safety kit make for a 5-star NCAP rating.
Huge: 563 litres in the boot, going up to over 1,600 with stowed rear seating.
Rain-sensing wipers, tyre-pressure sensor and collision-detection as standard.
Mazda 6, Vauxhall Vectra
Huge, cheap, good diesel engines.
Quality is dubious, as are residuals.

I quite like the Citroen C5, but it just feels a bit basic until you start looking at the more expensive models with all the extras.

I´ve had a C5 diesel estate since new in 2003 and it´s never given me any trouble at all. I´ve heard a lot of murmurs about reliability but I can honestly say it´s the most reliable car I´ve ever had - and cheap to run and insure too. Add excellent long-distance performance and easy driving to the mix, plus tons of space and refined equipment, and in spite of the quirkiness it´s a clear winner.
