Performance

1.4-, 1.6- and 2.0-litre engines in both petrol and diesels. The 1.4s are slightly underpowered while the 2.0 VTRs are straying into hot hatch territory. (See C4 VTR).

Driving

A firm ride with good body control. Steering is light but sharp and suspension is not great.

Feel

Road and element noise is quiet, as are the engines.

Price

Citroen have been tending to offer unusual deals and with good fuel economy and tax/insurance levels it's a cheap runner. Residuals something of an unknown quantity.

Quality

Build quality is pretty good, with sturdy materials throughout.

Safety

Loads of electronic aids and six airbags. 5 stars on NCAP tests. If you're an idiot this car will probably look after you.

Space

Not the biggest for passengers in the rear. Boot is a decent size. 3-door version may prove a struggle for some.

Equipment

Cruise control, electric windows and mirrors and CD player as standard. Air con and alloys are a bit higher up and at the top of the range there's kit all over the place. Alive with technology you could say.

Alternatives

Ford Focus, Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf, Vauxhall Astra, Renault Megane, Peugeot 307, Honda Civic

Pros

Good driving, innovative, full of kit.

Cons

Cramped cabin.

Avant-Garde with an edge

by Winston (Comberton) - 20/09/2005 12:54:57

I thought I would never use the word Avant-Garde, but I fear it may be the only way to describe this car. It has balls, it roars, but it is a gentle roar. And of all my years of driving a company car, this is the most stylish thing I have driven. Such a shame I would have to say that about a French car, but with Rover knocked out of the race, and the Bavarians having gone insane, I guess it is "Oui, bien sur", I'll have another, please.
