Segment/Specs
Hatchback

Has cost on its side, and it might suit being quietly driven to the shops and back. Not for a driver looking for something fun to drive.

Performance

1.4, 1.6 and 1.8-litre engines provide adequate power, with the 1.6 the best bet, with about the same power as the 1.8 but enough grunt on the motorway.

Driving

Steering and cornering sluggish. Little feedback and body roll make for a car that does not take windy A roads in its stride.

Feel

Fairly well-insulated cabin, but the engines rasp a bit when pushed.

Price

Good price, good running costs. Residuals won't match established rivals but won't be crippling either.

Quality

Cabin quality is better than the Daewoos the Lacetti replaces, but still look a little on the cheap side. Engines shouldn't pose any problems.

Safety

ABS and front bags as standard. ISOFIX child restraints, with more airbags on higher trim levels. Security provision is disappointing.

Space

Good space front and back. Small boot and high lip not in Lacetti's favour, but folding seats rescue the situation somewhat.

Equipment

Three trim levels: CD player, power steering, electric windows and central locking on the base model. Alloys and leather are available higher up, with an auto 'box an option.

Alternatives

Suzuki Liana, Nissan Almera

Pros

Spacious, good value.

Cons

Poor drive, poor safety kit.

1.6SX 2005

I just can't understand why these car are not more popular.Bought a year old 5 door hatch last week as I was looking for something different. I am very pleased.Very smooth to drive and with 4 airbags, aircon, abs, power steering, decent 6 speaker stereo with controls on steering wheel as well as 2 years servicing left, parts and labour, 2 years warranty and 2 years AA cover and even 5 years rust warranty thrown in. The car will cruise with no strain on the engine whatsoever at well over the motorway speed limit. I am very happy indeed with my new purchase of this one year old car but it would have been good if an alarm was standard and not a £400.00 extra. The car does seem to me a little light and weak when you pull away if you are used to driving and comparing to bigger engined cars as you have to go through gears quickly. If driving on UK roads then so far as I am concerned if you are not badge or status orientated then you really do not need anything else. Fantastic value.
