Performance

7 engines to choose from, topping out with the 400bhp V8. Plenty of torque across the board and with a choice of engines there's one for every pocket, provided you're loaded.

Driving

A firm ride, but superb steering and traction. DTC lets you live a little more dangerously but will prevent you from going OTT.

Feel

Well insulated from the elements and road noise. Engine noise is a welcome accompaniment.

Price

Starting prices are £28K but the 3-Series will really hold onto its value and – for a coupe – they're not particularly thirsty. Diesels will be more economical.

Quality

Predictably superb inside and out.

Safety

Anti-lock brakes, traction control and loads of airbags as standard.

Space

Plenty of room for passengers, given its coupe status. Obviously not much use for a school run though. Bootspace is good at 440 litres.

Equipment

Sports suspension, traction and stability control as standard.

Alternatives

Jaguar XK Coupe, Mercedes CLK

Pros

Beautifully engineered and great to drive, there'll be a good combination of efficiency and enjoyment just for you amongst those engines.

Cons

Workmate jealousy?

The ultimate company car

Been driving one of these for my job the past few months. Excellent handling, great comfort, and a cracking stereo. Most warmly recommended

Watch the rear-wheel drive

by Chris (Liverpool) - 04/09/2007 09:45:36

After owning front-wheel drive cars for years, it was tricky to get used to the difference in handling, especially accelerating around corners and roundabouts, which teases the rear end out and nearly puts the car in a spin if you´re too ambitious on the pedals. However, even though my BMW 3 Series is 10 years old, it drives beautifully, is comfortable even in the back, plenty of space and the power is just an added bonus. Love it!
