There's a strong and varied line-up of engines - five petrols and two diesels. Both 2.0-litres are flexible and assured, with the 3.2-litre petrol giving more oomph for your money.
A workmanlike performance with good grip but the steering lacks feel.
The diesels and 1.6 are noisy but the cabin is well-insulated from engine noise and the elements.
Expensive but will maintain residuals well
The same as the A3, but slightly bigger
Every A3 has deadlocks, central locking and an alarm. Same spec as the A3 with six airbags.
Great space for the driver and front passenger but the rear is cramped. Boot space, unsurprisingly, is better in the 5-door, particularly with rear seats folded down.
Electric front windows and CD player in the entry-level but no air con. Alloys throughout the range.
