1.6 and 2.0-litre petrols are both adequate performers, the latter delivering plenty of torque. The 1.9-litre turbodiesels really deliver on low-down power and torque, with the 150bhp version delivering real hot-hatch performance to the 147.
Reacts quickly and smoothly, but the ride can be pretty rough. Your attitude to that will depend on what you expect from your hatch.
Some road noise can be heard inside, but a pleasing rasp from the engine is a welcome sound effect.
The Alfa 147 depreciates rapidly, while high CO2 emissions and running costs generally don’t help.
147's interior looks classy and smart. Engines are good but Alfa Romeo does have a problem with reliability.
6 airbags as standard with traction control on most 147 models. Only 3/5 stars on NCAP passenger tests - poor in this day and age.
Doesn't compare well with similar cars in the hatchback class. It's really 2+2 only with fairly limited luggage space. Alfa's 147 is not the most practical hatch on the market.
Aircon, electric windows and mirrors, and CD player as standard. Alloys and cruise control are available at higher trim levels. Leather upholstery, satnav and more are options.

The 147 looks great, has a lovely interior and features strong engines, particularly the diesels.
Poor reliability. Expensive running costs and residual value.
