New Vauxhall boss to meet government and unions over jobs

Nick Reilly, interim Opel boss, will meet with Lord Mandelson and the Unite union to discuss the company's long-term plans for Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port and Luton plants.

GM decided at the last minute not to sell its Opel and Vauxhall operations to Canadian parts-maker Magna last month. But the company has warned that it still needs to shed jobs across Europe.

Reilly will face a grilling from Mandelson and Tony Woodley of Unite over job losses and the future of both plants.

While Ellesmere Port is thought to be among Opel's stronger operations, the future of Luton, which makes the Vivaro van, is thought to be less secure.

The government has announced that it is prepared to offer financial assistance to GM.

The collapse of the Magna deal has led to Germany's offer of billions of Euros in bridging loans being withdrawn, and the UK, Spain and Belgium will be under pressure to offer cash to secure the future of plants in those countries.

Around 54,000 workers are employed by Opel and Vauxhall, with around one tenth employed in the UK.
