The new Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion is available to order now at £17,325.
The low-CO2 model returns 74.3mpg on the combined cycle and emits 99g/km of carbon dioxide - significant advances over the previous model, which was itself impressive.
The new Golf BlueMotion uses a 104bhp 1.6-litre TDI common-rail engine that develops 184lb-ft at 1,500 rpm. Performance-wise, the BlueMotion sprints to 62mph in 11.3 seconds and goes onto 118mph.
Standard spec is based on the standard Golf S model, but adds a Start/Stop system, regenerative braking, hill hold, longer gear ratios, low rolling resistance tyres, a multifunction computer showing recommended gear changes for maximum economy and sports suspension.
Other standard kit includes ABS with ESP, seven airbags, Climatic semi-automatic climate control and an RCD 210 radio / MP3 compatible CD player.
A sports styling kit – comprising sports bumpers, side skirts, enlarged rear roof spoiler, 15-inch ‘Wellington’ alloy wheels, cherry red rear lights, chrome grille louvres and BlueMotion badges – is also added to improve aerodynamics and boost efficiency.
To reduce weight the new Golf BlueMotion comes with a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel.
At £17,325 the BlueMotion comes with a £785 premium over the standard S 1.6-litre TDI 105 PS Golf, and a further £585 for the five-door.
Volkswagen says it is confident that customers will recoup this money as the BlueMotion is exempt from annual road tax and reduced fuel costs. VW says a driver covering 10,000 miles per year will save over £120 per year in fuel.
The 99 g/km Golf will be the only model in the range to be called simply Golf BlueMotion. The 107 g/km Golf models will now be denoted as BlueMotion Technology models.
