Mazda3 with stop-start reduces consumption and emissions

Mazda will introduce fuel-saving stop-start technology to its new Mazda3 149bhp 2.0 Sport model, which will go on sale from £18,025 in hatch and saloon guises.

Mazda says the i-stop system can reduce fuel consumption by up to 16 per cent and emissions by 19 per cent.

The Mazda3 with stop-start can return 41.5mpg and emit 159g/km of carbon dioxide - previous models returned 175g/km and returned 36.7mpg. Acceleration to 62mph take 10.4 seconds, while top speed is 128mph and 132mph respectively in the hatch and saloon.

The technology pauses the engine when the car's stopped in traffic or at lights and neutral is selected, so it is on ‘stand-by’ for a rapid restart in 0.35 seconds when the driver depresses the clutch.
