The Volvo XC60 crossover SUV has been named Overall Winner title at the Towcar Awards 2009.
The five-door crossover was also judged best in class for the 1900kg+ kerb weight category.
Volvo has since introduced two new engines to the XC60 range, including a new 2.4D DRIVe that emits 159g/km while boosting power to 173bhp. D5 variants get a power boost to 203bhp and a emissions cut to 183g/km.
David Motton, Contributing Editor at Practical Caravan Magazine and head judge at the Towcar Awards, said: “Many cars made our judges sit up and take notice, but one stood out above all others: the Volvo XC60. Great to look at, great to travel in and tow with, the Volvo just had to win.
Testing was divided into categories, with each vehicle being marked on its towing ability, practicality and cost of ownership.
On-the-road assessments included measuring vehicle stability, hill starts (for handbrake strength and traction), acceleration and braking tests.
The Volvo XC60 is priced from £24,995 for the entry level 2.4D DRIVe S model.
Other winners include the Jaguar XF, Ford S-MAX, Volkswagen Golf and Skoda Superb.
David Motton, Towcar Awards head judge, said: "If money was no object, this is the car we'd choose to do our towing with. The 3.0-litre Diesel S engine is superb, yet it's also savagely powerful when the occasion demands, pulling car and caravan from 30-60mph in just 8.3 seconds.
