Volvo plug-in hybrid by 2012

Volvo says it will bring a plug-in hybrid vehicle to market by 2012, having signed an agreement with Swedish energy supplier Vattenfall.
The Swedish manufacturer says its DRIVe Towards Zero programme will make a plug-in hybrid a realistic proposition by 2012, and its partnership with Vattenfall will allow the company to develop in a sustainable manner.
Volvo will manufacture the cars and Vattenfall will develop charging systems and supply the cars with electricity.
"We want to reinforce electricity's importance in society and its key role in solving climate issues. Through this cooperation we hope to be able to speed up the introduction of electric cars," said Lars G Josefsson, President and CEO of Vattenfall.
"Together we are developing the next-generation technology based on plug-in cars and various charging alternatives."
Josefsson says nearly all of Vattenfall's energy produced in Sweden is emissions-free.
"DRIVe Towards Zero is our vision and with Vattenfall's expertise and partnership, we are making giant strides towards our targets," said Volvo boss Stephen Odell.
"With our updated environmental map for the future, we are reinforcing our leading position in the environmental sphere within the premium segment,"
Volvo says a plug-in hybrid will use diesel technology, where hybrids on the road today generally use a petrol engine for practical reasons. It also says that a relative figure for the plug-in hybrids is likely to be around 50g/km.
Volvo will display three Volvo V70 demonstration cars in 2009 to showcase the technology.
