Mercedes has revealed the first official sketches of the new Mercedes SLS AMG coupe, Mercedes' successor to the SLR, which was developed with McLaren.
Known more widely as the Gullwing, the SLS sketches reveal heavy retro styling, focussing on the gullwing doors, huge grilles and vents, a single centred exhaust pipe and swept-back headlights.
Mercedes is aiming to make the SLS a real driver's car, with a 563bhp 6.2-litre V8 capable of propelling the Gullwing to 62mph in 3.8 seconds. It's primarily made from aluminium to keep weight down, while there's double-wishbone suspension.
The engine lies midships, front of the engine to help the 48:52 ratio weight balance, while the seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox, controlled with paddle shifters, is at the back.
Four transmission modes will be available for various driving conditions – from school run to once-a-year-track-day – and will be selected via a dial on the transmission tunnel. ESP can be switched off too, and the driver has manual control over the rear spoiler.
Prices will likely be upwards of £140K, but we'll get a better look at the coupe at Frankfurt in the Autumn.
