Volkswagen has unveiled the new Golf GTD – a diesel hot hatch – at the Leipzig Show, just as the Mark VI GTI goes on sale in the UK.
The GTD is a little slower on the sprint than the GTI at 8.1 seconds and tops out at 136mph, but offers combined fuel consumption of an impressive 53.3mpg. VW says this makes it capable of 650 miles on a single tank of fuel.
The GTD gets the same chassis as the GTI, while the torquey 168bhp 2.0-litre engine offers maximum 258lb-ft from 1,750rpm.
CO2 emissions are 139g/km - a substantial cut from the petrol-engines GTI – through a six-speed manual or automatic DSG gearbox.
As on the GTI, suspension is lowered by 15mm when compared to the standard Golf, while Adaptive Chassis Control system (ACC), is available as an option, allowing the driver to select from normal, comfort or sport modes to define the desired suspension, steering and accelerator response settings for any particular journey.
The Golf GTD gains the GTI’s honeycomb grille, badge-style and front-end design, though with the addition of chrome rather than red highlights. Body-coloured bumpers and 17-inch ‘Seattle Black’ alloys also differentiate te GTD from the standard Golf.
A flat-bottomed steering wheel, a GTD gearshift and a standard grey tartan interior are unique to the GTD.
As with the rest of the Golf range, the new GTD will feature ABS, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) and seven airbags. The Golf received a maximum five-star rating by the EuroNCAP crash testing agency.
UK buyers will be able to order a Golf GTD from the end of April. Prices are yet to be confirmed but will start at under £22,000.
The car will go on sale on 22 June – exactly one month after the first GTIs hit UK roads.
