The new Porsche Panamera grand tourer will make its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show in April before going on sale in the Summer of 2009 in a further sign of the West's interest in China as a new market. Porsche has released a number of new photos of the new 2+2 to hail the news.
Porsche, which has recently increased its stake in Volkswagen to over 50 per cent, says the Panamera will be powered by a choice of V6 and V8 engines covering a power range between 300–500bhp, though the GT will debut with a choice of normally-aspirated or turbocharged V8s.
Power will be transmitted to the rear wheels through a choice of six-speed manual box or seven-speed double clutch, which will be available on all models as an option where it is not standard fit.
The range-topper will feature Porsche Traction Management with active all-wheel drive as standard, though again other models will come with the option.
A Sports Chrono Package tweaking engine and gearshift characteristics will also be available and may be required to ensure the Panamera's handling lives up to its Porsche heritage.
The chimaera-like nature of the Panamera – it uses engines sources from VW and a platform that is the basis of VW, Audi and Porsche models - chimes with the news of Porsche's increased stake in VW. Expect more platform- and part-sharing to come from the cosy, dysfunctional VW family in the future.
The Panamera will line up against the likes of the Maserati Quattroporte, Mercedes-Benz CLS and Aston Martin Rapide
