The first picture of Chevrolet’s new global entry into the supermini car market was unveiled by GM at the Detroit Auto Show. GM also announced that the small car would also form part of the brand’s North American range as part of GM's attempts to break into the small-car market.
The Chevrolet Orlando show car will also go into production reality in 2010 and will go on sale in Europe and the USA.
Aimed squarely at the Ford Fiesta and similar superminis, the five-door Spark is strongly reminiscent of the Chevrolet Beat concept and will display at attempt at the European funkiness as seen in the Fiesta, as well as the likes of the Clio, 207 and Polo.
Developed largely in Europe, the Spark will go into production in Korea in the final quarter of 2009, with European sales – including the UK – starting early in 2010. It will go on sale in the USA the following year.
The Orlando seven-seater MPV features SUV-style looks and will aim at those looking to downsize from larger SUVs.
These two stylish vehicles make a big statement,” said Wayne Brannon, Executive Director, Chevrolet Europe. “With their fresh, clean approach, we believe Spark and Orlando will appeal to a wide range of customers who want fuel efficiency, functionality and great design combined with excellent value.”
Chevrolet Europe broke 500,000 sales mark for the first time in 2008 and Chevy will be looking to further increase sales and brand penetration in Europe and the UK on the back of the Spark, Orlando and forthcoming Cruze saloon, due out in 2009. GM's electronic Volt technology is likely to debut on models in Europe over 2009 or 2010, with Vauxhall likely to carry the tech in the UK.
