Nissan has released pictures and details of its Cube supermini/MPV/CV at the LA Show, prior to its global roll-out in 2009.
Already to familiar to Japanese motorists, and somewhat similar to the Daihatsu Materia, the Cube will go global next year with prices mooted at around £10-11K.
Quite astonishingly, Nissan explains the Cube's charm as evoking a 'pocket-sized fun-and-function cocktail mixing the charm of Godzilla and the wit of Mothra'. MotorTorque doesn't remember Mothra - a giant mayhem-causing moth - being especially witty, but we'll go with it.
The Cube has a similar footprint to a supermini – in fact its wheelbase is 10mm longer than a Micra - but its cavernous shape and the wheels pushed out to the corners mean it can transport huge amounts of cargo.
The lack of a D-pillar also means the car Cube will have a wraparound rear window for added visibility, while there's not boot availabel - a side-hinged tailgate being preferred.
Inside the Cube is rather more conventional, though there is a bizarre options list, extending to shag-pile carpeting. Pitched as something of a style icon, the CUbe comes in a range of colours called Witty Military, White Pearl, Sea Turquoise and Bitter Chocolate.
It's powered by a choice of 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines mated to a CVT, while an all-electric version is also a possibility for the future.
