Citroen is to investigate the viability of a production model based on its ultra-economical C-Cactus concept.
The C-Cactus is constructed with economical and environmental considerations the key consideration, with a reduced number of components and reduction in weight limiting cost and the impact on the environment.
Any non-essential components are removed in the C-Cactus, including the dashboard, meaning the interior comprises around half the parts of a similarly-sized conventional car.
Door panels are made of just two parts, compared to twelve in a conventional car and many components are made from recycled materials.
The project will consider a range of powerplants including a 1.0-litre, sub-100g/km petrol engine; a HYmotion2 diesel–electric hybrid returning nearly 100mpg and emitting 78g/km; or a zero-emission all-electric model with a top speed and range of almost 70mph and 100 miles respectively.
High oil prices, tough economic conditions and the arrivals of a new generation of hybrids and electric vehicles have pushed low-emissions vehicles to the forefront over 2008, and potential EU-wide emissions targets of 130g/km are also likely to accelerate the development of greener models.
