Vauxhall’s new Insignia will achieve significantly higher residual values than the Vectra model it replaces, according to valuing specialists EurotaxGlass’s.
The publisher of Glass’s Guide suggests that the new £18,962 Insignia 2.0 CDTi (130ps) SRi 5dr will retain 37 per cent (£7,000) of its purchase price after three years and 60,000 miles, compared to 28 per cent (£4,950) for the equivalent Vectra.
“Though starting prices are higher than those of the Vectra, Vauxhall has justified the increase by improving build quality and making it more entertaining to drive,” explains Jason King, Head of Market Intelligence at EurotaxGlass’s.
“This helps the car compete effectively with the latest generation of upper-medium segment rivals.”
Of the Insignia's competitors, the Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi (140ps) Zetec five-door (34 per cent), Citroen C5 2.0 HDi (140ps) VTR four-door (36 per cent) and VW Passat 2.0 TDi (140ps) Highline four-door (35 per cent) lose out to the Insignia.
King suggests that the change of name is an obvious indication of Vauxhall’s confidence in the new product. “It is as significant a move for the marque as it was in the re-branding of the Cavalier to the Vectra in 1995. The decision shows that Vauxhall wants to position the Insignia as a car of choice, not just another option on a fleet list.”
“The distinctive ‘blade’ that runs along the side of the car enhances the coupe-like silhouette, and the exterior curves are echoed inside, creating a much more driver-focused environment compared to the rigid, angular lines of the Vectra’s cabin.”
“Thanks to work completed at Vauxhall’s Engineering Centre based at Millbrook, the Insignia will be well placed to cope with demanding UK roads.
"A number of new engine options deliver strong performance, balancing enough power with fuel economy and low emissions.
“Digital audio, adaptive headlamps and suspension systems, and the integration of road sign recognition cameras will ensure the car also appeals to the modern car buyer needing both functionality and an engaging drive,” concludes King.
