Ford has released pictures and details for the new Ford Ka city car prior to its launch at the Paris Motor Show.
The new Ka will replace the origin, outgoing model which has been on sale in EUrope since 1996. Ford says the new model will be improved in terms of styling, safety, environmental credentials, economy and practicality.
New 'Kinetic' styling features will take cues from the new Mondeo, Fiesta, Focus and Kuga, but the new model is still recognisably a Ka, if viewed through the lens of the funkier small cars of the late-noughties such as the Nissan Micra and Fiat 500 - perhaps unsurprisingly, as the new Ka is built on the same production line as the 500.
Ford says the new car will comfortably accommodate four adults plus luggage, while a high seating position provides good visibility.
Ford says the suspension, steering, and chassis have been tuned to give a responsive drive, and testing included laps at the Nürburgring.
Production of the all-new Ford Ka commences in the autumn of 2008, and the vehicle will go on sale in the UK in late 2008 or early 2009.
The new Ka will be driven by one petrol or one turbodiesel engine: a 1.2-litre 68bhp petrol lump and a 1.3-litre 74bhp Duratorq TDCi turbodiesel, both of which offer emissions under 120g/km.
The 1.2-litre petrol model cuts fuel consumption by 21 per cent compared to the previous 1.3-litre Ka, while the diesel model returns 67.2mpg on the combined cycle.
A new bodyshell is combined with an Intelligent Protection System (IPS), which integrates airbags, restraint systems and seating technologies to improve safety.
Trim levels will include Studio, Style, Style + and Zetec, while options include the Bluetooth-enabled Connectivity Kit, providing Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, a USB port to play music files through the sound system and steering wheel controls.
Heated windscreen and heated seats, are additional options.
500,000 Ford Kas have been sold in the UK, with research indicating that Ka customers have the highest customer brand loyalty of any Ford model.
