Images of GM's long-awaited plug-in electric Chevrolet Volt have been leaked to the web, ahead of the official release next week timed to coincide with GM's 100th anniversary.
The pictures show GM senior management posing with the Volt, which is styled as a fairly conservative saloon that would not look out-of-place on US or UK roads.
The Volt Concept's futuristic and muscular looks have been smoothed away, apparently at the requirement of a better aerodynamic drag coefficient, and are likely to disappoint fans of the the original.
The Volt will tilt at buyers who are likely to consider buying the Toyota Prius or Honda Civic Hybrid or Insight - all hybrids that generate electrical energy from engine overrun.
The Volt can be plugged directly into mains and can use a small petrol engine to charge batteries, but the power to the wheels is 100 per cent electric, unlike the Toyota and Honda models, which rely on small petrol engines in tandem with electric power.
The Volt will be good for 40 miles on electric power, whereupon the petrol engine will power the batteries.
The Chevrolet Volt when it goes on sale in the autumn of 2010, with an expected asking price of around $40,000 in the US. Tax breaks are being considered by the government for Volt buyers.
A release around the world is expected to follow shortly, with the Volt potentially badged as a Vauxhall in the UK.
