All-new Audi S4 saloon and S4 Avant revealed

Audi has released details and pictures of the new S4 saloon and S4 Avant, prior to the performance models' debuts at next month's Paris Show.

Both S4 models come equipped with quattro four-wheel drive with 60:40 torque split, and will be powered by a supercharged 330bhp 3.0-litre V6 developing 406lb-ft, sprinting to 62mph in 5.1 seconds and topping out at a limited 155mph.

Audi is eschewing a turbocharger for the S4 in favour of a supercharger that goes up to an impressive 23,000rpm, apparently on the basis that the superblower is superior not only in terms of responsiveness and starting power, but also compactness.

All that power will be transmitted through a seven-speed S-tronic transmission for ultra-quick 200-milisecond shifting and improving economy by a staggering 26 per cent over the outgoing model to a halfway respectable 29.2mpg.

New features include an active differential with driver-selected settings to lighten the steering when going into turns by allowing more torque to be diverted to either rear wheel.

Driving dynamics can also be selected to change changes the throttle response, shift-points and speed-sensitive steering behavior in three basic modes - comfort, auto and dynamic.

The drive select system can only be fitted to cars that feature either adaptive control shock absorbers, dynamic steering or the sport differential.

Exterior styling points include LED running lights, eighteen-inch S-design alloys, new aprons and spoiler, and quad exhausts

Interior features include electric lumbar supports and adjustable thigh supports , while options include adaptive cruise control, Bang & Olufsen sound system and two navigation systems.

Deliveries are expected to begin in March 2009, with prices for the two starting around £36K and £38K.
