Volkswagen has released official pictures and details of the new, sixth-generation Golf hatchback, promising the safest, most technically advanced and most dynamic Golf yet.
The new Golf takes its visual cues from the new Scirocco coupe and is bolder than the outgoing model, though still recognisable a Golf. VW says the interior benefits from the quality levels of a vehicle in a higher segment, featuring white backlit dials, a three-spoke steering wheel with the option of controls for entertainment and communications functions and soft-touch plastics integrated with tasteful aluminium and chrome highlights.
New-design door and window seals make the new Golf quieter on the motorway than the outgoing model, with VW promising the Golf the quietest yet.
A new range of petrol and diesel engines includes a new 110bhp 2.0-litre common-rail turbodiesel emitting 119g/km of CO2 while returning 62.7mpg on the combined cycle.
Other diesel variants are available with 90bhp, 140bhp and 170bhp outputs linked to a choice of six-speed manual or DSG gearboxes. Petrol engine options with outputs of 80PS, 102PS, 122PS and 160PS are also available.
Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) will be an option on the Golf, allowing the driver to select from normal, comfort or sport modes to reset suspension, steering and accelerator response according to driver requirements..
Seven airbags are included as standard, while a new head restraint system is deigned to reduce whiplash injuries and rear seat belt detection. A new Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) is added to the new Golf.
Prices and specifications will be announced towards the end of the year before the new Golf goes on sale in the UK in January.
Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board, Volkswagen AG, commented: "This sixth generation of Golf cars will completely redefine the quality and comfort level of its class over broad categories, offering more customer value than ever before."
