New Peugeot Bipper 2-Tronic van greenest yet

It may be saddled with a daft name and be overtly green, but the new Peugeot Bipper S 1.4 HDi 2-Tronic certainly isn’t cabbage looking. As its environment and economy saving approach to transmission technology is testament to.

From £9,695, the 70bhp 1.4-litre HDi diesel engine Bipper 2-Tronic IS greener than a plateful of sprouts, a Friends of the Earth picnic and a really miffed Incredible Hulk. Yet moreover, it’s one of the greenest light commercial vehicles to date.

And how is that?

An electronically-controlled five-speed transmission makes inner city marauding a cinch. And doesn’t require a fussy instruction manual to get the hang of like in some vehicles. Two operating modes are key here, and it’s based on a rudimentary manual gearbox. Well, it is in manual mode, as the driver selects their gear lever and away they go. Away from all the DIY shifting, and the Bipper slips into automatic mode at the touch of a button.

And this is where the 2-Tronic gets its name from, and exactly the two points where the driver starts saving. And that’s because the advantages are two-fold. The usual two at times like these. Emissions and fuel consumption, the more meaningful ones.

Emitting a paltry 116g/km of carbon dioxide as it goes about the drivers business, the new Bipper 2-Tronic will run and run all day long. And 64.2 miles later, a gallon will be lost. 64.2 miles.

The new Peugeot Bipper S 1.4 HDi 70 2-Tronic costs £9,695, which is £340 over the standard guise Bipper LCV without the 2-Tronic. But then look at what more you’re getting for this.

Aside from the bipping obvious, there’s electric front windows, remote central locking, automated door locking mechanism over 12mph and electrically heated door mirrors. Which will save you the bother of frostbite on a winter’s morning. Savings at every turn.

With a load volume of 2.5m3 and a payload of 610kg, the 2-Tronic Bipper makes a great deal of shifting sense. And gear shifting savings.
