New BMW 1-Series drops more green hints

The new BMW 1-Series convertible has dropped the pretence that it had none of the green variety in mind for its 1-Series range, and now has a brace of clean-living and economic diesel engines to show for its eco-honesty.

And boy what engines they are.

BMW’s most sought after oil-burners have wound their way under the hood of the new £23,660 1-Series 118d and £28,105 123d convertibles, both of which are available to start your very own green odyssey in as of now.

The Bavarian car manufacturers’ most economical four pot engine in its history, and an-award snaffling twin-turbocharged lump couldn’t have arrived at a better time for the UK’s besieged motorists.

Held hostage to stifling pump prices, fans of open air motoring are as worried as the next driver about what happens next, and are not happy that the government and fuel companies are stopping them having fun in the sun.

But BMW has driven to the rescue in the nick of time, pulling up in two of the finest exponents of drop top pleasure-perpetuators on the market.

The BMW 118d convertible is in tune with its 143bhp 2.0-litre single turbo-charged power plant, and as a result ambushes 62mph in 9.5 seconds and keeps fighting all the way up to 129mph, with the assistance of 221lb-ft of torque to help it on its way. acceleration figures aside, it’s the way in which the 118d deals with fuel that makes all the headlines we’re concerned about here.

BMW EfficientDynamics brings fuel saving presence to new 118d and 123d

Courtesy of BMW’s EfficientDynamics package pulling all the right strings, 57.6 miles to the gallon is a realistic pump-pummeling target, with carbon dioxide kept to a respectable 129g/km at the same time. These glowing statistics ensure that the 118d is the most economic and least polluting convertible car in its class.

Should BMW cabriolet customers demand that little more poke from their Dervs, then may we introduce you to the BMW 123d convertible. It may come with the same 2.0-litre unit, but all performance similarities cease there. Twin turbo-charged, the 123d furnace conjures up some 204bhp and thus canons the slick drop-top toward the 62mph approaching horizon in 7.5 seconds thanks to torque of 300lb-ft, only stopping to inhale the clean air that it emits once it acknowledges the sunny side of 143mph.

Again, EfficientDynamics hold all the trump cards and enables the 123d to travel 52.3 miles to the gallon, and channeling just 144g/km of CO2 filth skywards. The lowest compared to any rival’s topless automotive product currently in UK car shops.

Both models accommodate a six-speed selection of gear linkage to manually deploy.

The BMW 118d convertible retails from £23,660, whilst the 123d convertible will relieve buyers of £28,105 of their hard earned.
