Chrysler is considering selling its Dodge Viper sports car brand after receiving enquiries about the performance business.
The Dodge Viper is a 600bhp V10 8.4-litre muscle car that sells in low volumes for Chrysler, though a new 2008 model has sold strongly in the US this year, despite a difficult market for performance and luxury models.
Chrysler has divested itself of several assets since de-merging from Daimler in 2007, with factories and design houses being spun off under private equity business Cerberus.
It has also moved to form partnerships with emerging manufactures such as Tata and Chery, while firming up agreements with Nissan and Renault.
The Viper plant is based in Detroit and employs over 100 people. Chrysler boss Bob Nardelli has been keen to reassure watchers that the company will ensure the brand's future is assured.
The big three American manufacturers have spent much of 2008 spinning off assets to free up cash as the credit crunch continues to bite in US markets.
Ford has sold Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover over the last 12 months and is rumoured to be discussing the sale of Volvo and its stake in Mazda. GM is thought to be close to selling its large SUV Hummer brand.
