Audi to get electric version of VW Up! in 2011

Volkswagen will hand an all-electric variant of its upcoming, er, Up! compact city car over to partners Audi.That’s just as soon as VW pulls its finger out and launches the much anticipated miniaturised supermini. Which will happen soon after VW pulls the Up! engine out of the rear of the car and replaces it in the front. That’s according to sources closer to the German car manufacturing giant.With the Up! initially penciled in for official exposure in late 2010, it’s now looking more likely to be early 2011 before the automotive world catches its first glimpse of the city car in the metal.Based on that hedge-betting assumption, Audi’s electrically-powered assimilation will enter the public’s conscience from mid to late 2011.
Whether Audi is given the Volkswagen Up! in three-door hatchback, five-door hatch or MPV minivan form to electrify remains a closely guarded secret, with insiders only going as far to admit that a good part of the storage space will be overwhelmed by energy cells.With Audi said to be announcing the arrival of an electric version of its forthcoming – 2010 - A1 supermini, we assume that some sort of power source cross-fertilization will materialize nearer the time.We’re already aware that VW is working in conjunction with Sanyo to produce a lithium-ion battery to be used in selected future hybrid and electrically-orientated vehicles.
