Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe pimped by Pininfarina!

No. Put your tools down. Hands where we can see them, and walk away.

Word on the street – an incredibly posh tree-lined avenue probably- has it that the Italian design house Pininfarina is toiling away slammin' and a 'pimpin' a Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe!

Thankfully that word hasn’t been delivered by gangsta-rapping Vicar-sired Tim Westwood, the annoying face behind MTV’s ‘Pimp my Ride’, who himself has a nasty habit of turning up, confiscating peoples ‘rides’ and along with his team of ‘experts’, doing their worst to desecrate a car with arresting results.

All of which will come as a relief to the unnamed car collector who has commissioned Pininfarina to automotively bastardise a very rare £305,000 Phantom Drophead Coupe in return for not much change from £1 million quid.

And nor to our knowledge, is it anything whatsoever to do with celebrity car collector and increasingly part-time footballer, David Beckham, seeing as he’s only just blown a not inconsiderable wad burning a hole in his tightly starched Armani pants on his own Phantom Drophead, in which he’s been cruising up and down famous LA boulevards in this week.

The £305,000 Phantom Drophead Coupe should be exquisite enough for anyone’s exalted tastes, and delivers a fulsome two-fingered salute to the credit crunch that affects us mere mortals who don’t create Popstars TM/dribble a pig’s bladder/host fancy dress charity balls for vacuous celebs.

This ‘unique’ unique Rolls is mooted to be inspired by pre-war examples of the famous Royces, and in particular the original Phantom model, and will hark back to days of motoring yore by adopting a swept-back windscreen and finely chiseled flanks.

Perpetuating the folly that seems the bedrock of today’s filthy rich, the one-off Phantom will even bear its own moniker, so as not to be confused with the pauper’s editions. ‘Hyperion’ comes courtesy of the vaults of Greek mythology, and translates as ‘God of the sun’.

In equivalent Egyptian deities, Ra – the sun God – was depicted hieroglyphically-speaking by way of being a falcon with a man’s head sewn atop. Which would look mighty strange replacing the more ordinarily resplendent ‘flying lady’ on Rolls Royce grilles.

With new money casting adopting artistic license, God alone knows what symbolism will lead the way.

It’s not just the bodywork singled out for lavish attention though, and many open-mouthed onlookers will be keen to see just how Pininfarina will better an interior that already makes Claridges appear somewhat shabby.

May we be as bold as to suggest a fine Wedgewood porcelain dashboard, some onyx fixtures and fittings and a couple of velvet wingbacks up front?

Unless Pininfarina knows of some ‘under railway arch’ tooling outfit that could shame the standard 453bhp, 6.7-litre V12 Merlin engine that enables the Phantom to adopt a 62mph pose in six seconds and hold it at 150mph, we’re pretty sure the power train will remain factory-fitted, when, along with its new clothes, the emperor appears at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance event in America in August this year. Bet you can’t wait?

Rumours that it only runs on vintage Crystal champagne is unfounded and simply sour grapes.
