With Ford continuing to be none committal about the distinct possibility of a Capri comeback, Vauxhall couldn’t have chosen a better time to hint it may bring back the Calibra. Or may not. Either way, such automotive tittle-tattle could just be enough to force Ford’s hands. Oh how we live in hope.
With the public’s reception to the all-new Vauxhall Insignia being as it is – very positive – the Griffin badged marque might consider it a fortuitous juncture in which to start oiling the components of its rumour mill, and monitoring the feedback.
As much as it’s speculated gossip at the moment, GM insiders are telling anyone who cares to lend an ear that its big cheeses are looking at avenues that would lead to the reinvention of the defunct Calibra coupe, as they ride the crest of a very large Vauxhall Insignia wave.
Reliant on the new Insignia’s undergarments, any new two-door couple would depict tell tale signs of the Vauxhall GTC Coupe concept first cast eyes on at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, and that spells out – or at least sketches – the appropriate design language required to bring such a project to fruition.
Keen to establish the Insignia as a blueprint for a heady run-out of differing automotive shapes and sizes – beyond the hatch and saloon, we know an estate is forthcoming – it seems only natural that a coupe of some description could well be on Vauxhall’s cards and seemingly evolve. At least before the Insignia bubble bursts.
And just think as to what power a future Calibra could muster to lend substance to that styling, with the VXR performance brand on the make - having had such success’ with the Corsa, Astra and Monaro candidates of late – it’s surely a given that such power plants would be utilised.
It just begs the slightly more depressing question, ten years down the line, will housing estates roar to the tune of souped-up next-generation Vauxhall Calibra’s driven by the sons of Chav, or will a sleek and stylish new Calibra fall into the hands of a more discerning, less Burberry coupe buyer?
