Hyundai-kia scaling worldwide car manufacturers' sales chart
Published: 02 July 2008
Making massive inroads into previously unchartered automotive territories, the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group has edged into the top five of the world’s largest car manufacturers for the first time in its history.
Recording global sales totaling some 3,961,629, Hyundai-Kia as a motoring force to be reckoned with has shot up six places in just eight years, according to the figures calculated by Automotive News' 2008 Global Data Book, which was published this week.
As of 1999, Hyundai-Kia found itself just outside the then-top ten of the world’s biggest automotive players at number 11, yet statistics just released for 2007 shows it sitting in 5th place overall, and in the process, outselling those manufacturers whose production origins can be traced back many decades further, the likes of Honda, Nissan, Fiat and Chrysler for example.
With manufacturing bases found as far and wide apart as the United States, China, India, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Russia and Brazil, Hyundai-Kia's continued growth looks set to accelerate at a rate of knots as it pushes on with more new models in 2008/9.
2007 Global Sales Rankings
1. Toyota - 9,366,000 cars sold
2. General Motors - 8,902,252
3. Volkswagen - 6,191,618
4. Ford - 5,964,000
5. Hyundai-Kia - 3,961,629
6. Honda - 3,831,000
7. Nissan - 3,675,574
8. PSA/Peugeot - 3,428,400
