The all-new Ford Fiesta will be available to buy from October
Published: 11 July 2008
Ford has released details of the new Ford Fiesta, which will be made available around the world.
The new Fiesta is a radical styling departure from the previous model, with Kinetic-design sleek lines based on the Verve Concept and seen on new Ford of Europe models from the Focus to the Kuga.
Three- and five-door models will be available to buy in the UK from October 2009 with a new EConetic variant available with carbon emissions of 99g/km.
All powertrains - including four 16-valve Duratec petrol and two Duratorq TDCi diesel engine choices - have been tweaked to lower emissions, with Ford calculating that the annual reduction in CO2 emissions in Europe will be worth over 11,000 tonnes.
In addition to the ECOnetic model there are six trim levels available - Studio, Style, Style Plus, Zetec, Zetec S, Titanium - to provide maximum buyer choice, from entry-level to luxury trim.
An all-new Fiesta Zetec S model will be available at launch to cater for those looking for a sportier drive, equipped with a new 120bhp 1.6-litre Duratec Ti-VCT petrol engine.
And while the new Fiesta uses 55 per cent high-strength steel for increased safety, the new model is 40kg lighter than the outgoing Fiesta for improved economy and emissions. Ford also says the new Fiesta chassis is ten per cent stiffer, for improved safety and handling.
The Fiesta boot has 295 litres of load space, while there are numerous stowage spaces throughout the cabin, not to mention charging points for mobile phones and MP3 players.
Specially-tuned Electric Power Assist Steering provides low-speed steering ease with more direct driver feedback at higher speeds, says Ford.
Ford is keen to stress the convenience factor in the new Fiesta, with a mobil-phone infotainment system, reach-and-rake steering-wheel adjustment, keyless entry with engine 'Start' button and EasyFuel system to prevent misfuelling mishaps. Standard kit levels include power door mirrors.
Safety kit includes Intelligent Protection System with standard knee airbag and head-and-thorax side airbags, with optional safety curtain airbags.
Ford has sold over 12 million Fiestas since launch in 1976.

Whilst I admire the ´Kinetic´ styling of Ford´s Mondeo, I have to say that this new Fiesta can´t seem to be able to make up its mind. Externally, I find it takes more than a few cues from the Corsa VXR which isn´t *necessarily* a bad thing if you´re under 30. However, internally it has a very ´old´ interior - something you´re more likely to find in a Nissan Micra. The drive will be good as always because it´s a Ford but I think this has really missed the mark in terms of aesthetics.
