Mercedes has released pictures and details of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series.
And following on from Mercedes' an announcement that it will no longer work with McLaren on models such as the Mercedes-McLaren SLR, the SL 65 AMG Black Series will be carrying the performance torch for Merc until the debut of the new SLC.
The Black Series take the SL 65 AMG's 6.9-litre V12 and ads a hefty 57 more horses to the already-impressive 604bhp. Torque is a searing 738lb-ft through what must be a diamond-coated five-speed auto transmission, enabling slick gearchanging in 250 milliseconds and 62mph in 3.9 seconds. If you're crazy enough, and in Germany, you can take the Black Series up to 199mph.
The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series will debut at the Paris Motor Show in October before going on sale with a price-tag of around £150K.
End of the McMerc
Mercedes has announced that it will no longer produce the Mercedes-Mclaren SLR, as it is ending its partnership with the British racing outfit when the current contract expires in 2009.
The last SLR McLaren coupe rolled off the line at the end of 2007. The roadster will be discontinued in early 2009. The limited-edition SLR McLaren Speedster will be the companies' last work together.
Mercedes is instead concentrating on developing a halo car called the SLC with tuners AMG, which will share components with the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series and be available in coupe and roadster format.
There's nothing remotely practical, about convertibles or roadsters - from the Z4, Elise and SL to the Murcielago, Azure and Jag XK - but that won't matter the first time you drop the roof.

Mercedes releases details and images of the new SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG performance cabriolets, on sale in the UK from April.
The Mercedes SLK 55 AMG is available to order now with new steering, updated appearance and more agility for the AMG eight-cylinder.
New Mercedes C-Class C 63 AMG saloon, estate will be available to order now at £51,317 for the saloon and £52,567 for the estate.
