>Volkswagen is set to take advantage of Liverpool going green this week, as the city of culture showcases low-emission vehicles to businesses and other organisations with fleet concerns.
The latest leading automotive manufacturer committed to painting Liverpool's new ACC (Arena and Convention Centre) green on 12 June, the German car manufacturer will demonstrate its full range of energy-efficient commercial vehicles during the one day only event to be held this Friday.
More specifically however, the Green-Car-Guide-Live! 2008 is seen as the perfect platform on which for Volkswagen to out its prototype of the gas-powered Caddy EcoFuel vehicle for the first time in the UK.
The Caddy EcoFuel is powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Biomethane, and is primed to enter the UK commercial market in 2008.
The EcoFuel sibling is heading West thanks to public demand for an alternatively-fuelled vehicles. Good old-fashioned Brit persistence has resulted in the first right-hand drive prototype being volunteered for an initial pilot scheme, scheduled to shape up this summer, lower emissions and slashed fuel costs being the positives for the driver.
A 2.0-litre petrol engine that predominantly goes through the motions on CNG only uses petrol when needs must, courtesy of the Caddy EcoFuel's small petrol reserve tank. All-in-all, 350 miles is the envisaged range.
What's more, the gas filling point is easily accessible, sitting directly behind the conventional filler cap, and monitoring the system is made straightforward by the inclusion of an electronic fuel gauge display set into the dash fascia.
And the gas tanks – that hold 26kg of CNG - are secured to the underside of the Caddy, meaning loadspace is not inhibited.
