Ford's new PowerShift transmission comes of age in Focus and C-MAX
Published: 24 June 2008
The Ford Focus with the car manufacturer’s new PowerShift transmission is available now at £18,195 for the three-door 2.0-litre TDCI Zetec, whilst a five-door C-MAX 2.0-litre TDCI Zetec equipped with the same transmission costs from £19,895.
Ford claims that its PowerShift configuration offers greater fuel efficiency than a conventional automatic mechanism, yet the up and down-shifts are quicker than both auto and manual gearboxes.
Electronically-controlled twin-clutch technology is about to touch down in the new Ford Focus and C-Max, as FoMoCo become the latest global car manufacturer to adopt the technology.
Ford’s lightweight six-speed PowerShift transmission negates the need for complex and weight-adding sub-systems such as torque converters and the planetary gear assemblage associated with regular auto boxes.
Facilitating a familiar standardised automatic gear lever located in the centre console, with the traditional P, R, N and D horizontally-lettered synchronization, the new PowerShift selector can select a ride of an altogether sportier disposition, and with it the introduction of a manual shift.
Ford’s PowerShift follows the same double-clutch gearbox pattern as Volkswagen Group’s much trumpeted DSG transmission, which has almost single-handedly eradicated the near-asthmatic mentality that typified automatic boxes of old.
PowerShift is available on either the Ford Focus or C-MAX ranges and with the 2.0-litre TDCI diesel unit. Two states of tune are available, 134bhp or 108bhp, while all Focus models equipped with PowerShift offer a combined fuel economy of 48.6mpg, with average CO22 emissions of just 154 g/km. The C-MAX delivers 47.9mpg and 159g/km.
